Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I am convinced we're already seeing generative AI used to "verify" military targets for Israel (including now and during their genocide in Palestine) and the US, as well as in ICE with facial recognition for US detainment and target confirmation. If we survive this period in time, any attempt to hold these people accountable for their actions will be met with the excuse they were using generative AI to pick targets and cannot be blamed when the AI makes a mistake. We must not let them use that as an excuse to skirt accountability for the indiscriminate bombings and assaults on civilian targets across the world.

Unfortunately, I cannot see any way out of this so long as we have no government capable, or willing, to reign in the power of these large-data corporations and tech bros. All of this is orchestrated by a group of ultra-wealthy pedophiles pushing technologically-clueless dotards in governments to spearhead the use of generative AI for military and surveillance applications when the technology is misunderstood at best, and ostensibly dangerous at worst. I believe this will only get worse before it gets better if we do not do anything to stop this, and I don't know what we can do to stop any of this at this point.

AI is going to destroy everything being some of the final nails in the coffin. Nothing is going to be trusted anymore. Anyone can make up any lie and say it’s real because they have “proof.” It’s going to amplify the worst of human greed and quest for power - whether that be on social media or politically.

I mention this to people where i live. AIs most "promising" use as part of a mass survelince system wouldnt be catching intended targets but fabricating bullshit to justify who were caught in the dragnet

Considering that we have folk ALL over social media already using "they are just following orders" to excuse what the US military is already doing to our own fucking people...

But I also suggest reading up a lot more on what the Nuremburg Trials actually were (and weren't). It is good that we kind of universally acknowledged "I was just following orders" is not an excuse for murder, rape, and genocide (... for about as long as we acknowledged nazis were the universal evil). But the reality is that it was a complete and utter shitshow with very few actual convictions. In large part because... war is a LOT more "air bud rules" than people realize. And most of the ceremonial high profile targets... actually had good lawyers.

Over dramatized youtube essay, but Jacob Geller has a really good video where he goes into this.

Sincerely, out of my respect, USA already surpassed Nazis much years ago. Better we don't speak about USA today.

But I want to believe these malignant piggies won't escape.

No... The modern Nuremberg excuse will be "we all have mortgages to pay...."

Thanks late stage capitalism!

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

You guys have mortgages?

[–] sundaymidnight@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

oh yes... showing the face at 12 AM

you understand the late capitalism

AI is the logical conclusion to McKinsey analysts...

Why pay a "coming soon ceo" to tell you to fuck over workers and raise CEO pay when you can program a computer to do it?

If it doesn't tell them what they want to hear, it means it needs "tweaked" if it tells them their pre-existing opinion is right, then it's not their idea anymore and the AI is to blame when it backfires.

If AI would be the downfall of McKinsey and their peers, more people would be for it.

How is this a shower thought?

[–] regedit@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago (1 child)

Because I thought about it while showering after reading about how AI is going to be used in military application, knowing full well it is not even correctly identifying dangerous outcomes with non-military applications. Why do you ask?

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 child)

Just fairly long winded and intense for scrub a dub time I guess. You do you though, I don't think its necessarily wrong for the community.

[–] regedit@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 child)

Unfortunately, it's the world forced upon all of us and not a hard thing to think about when the last thing you saw, before the shower, was about this incredibly reckless genAI proposal. Trust me, I'd rather think about puppies or kittens.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Understandable

[–] sundaymidnight@lemmy.world 1 point 1 day ago

Really, not. It's a terrible excuse.

If you are responsible to make decisions, you can't blame the tool you had chosen.

Sorry, I don't speak German (I think that was German).

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago

It is German, but the video seems to have a translation into English too (also French) which you can access through the cogwheel menu.

[–] sundaymidnight@lemmy.world 1 point 1 day ago

translate, use the Firefox, push the note-paper icon in the text-bar,

translate, use the Brave, push "yes, translate it"

many tools there
